A woman was detained in Ondo for stealing a newborn child who later perished
Funmilayo Mogbojuri, 35, was detained by the Ondo State Police Command for allegedly kidnapping a newborn child at Sabo in the state’s Okitipupa Local Government Area.
In a statement released on Wednesday, July 20, the command’s spokeswoman, SP Funmi Odunlami, said the suspect was captured in Sagamu, Ogun state, five days after she fled with the child.
In January 2021, the suspect Funmilayo took a baby from the home of another lady in Okitipupa, but the child passed away a few days later, according to the PPRO.
“One Abass Issah of Arikawe Street, Okitipupa came to the Station on July 13, 2022, and claimed that his newborn infant had been taken by unidentified people. The baby’s 35-year-old abductor, Funmi Mogbojuri, was apprehended after a quiet investigation by Okitipupa Divisional Policemen. She had fled with the child to Makun, Sagamu in Ogun State.
It was discovered that she abducted another baby on January 16, 2021, at Okitipupa, handed the infant to one Lucky “m,” and claimed the child died a few days later. During questioning, she confessed to have absconded with the baby to her husband’s home one Odunayo Ayobami “m.” The inquiry is ongoing. The sentence was read.
Funmilayo, who admitted to the crime and begged for pardon, said she couldn’t explain the spirit that drove her to do such a thing.
Binta Alhassan, the mother of the child, gave a description of what happened, saying the woman kidnapped the child as she was taking a bath.
Binta said that she offered the suspect a room after she asked for a place to stay the night. She was horrified to see the suspect fleeing with her child the next morning as she was leaving the restroom.
