After being threatened with impeachment by senators Buhari convenes an emergency security meeting

President Muhammadu Buhari convened an emergency security meeting with the National Security Council in response to the MPs’ threat to impeach him over the nation’s security crisis.

The members left the chamber on July 27, 2022, under the leadership of the Senate Minority Leader, Philip Aduda (PDP, FCT), after Senate President Ahmad Lawan blocked a motion to discuss the nation’s current security challenges.

Why Senators Want Buhari Removed from Office: Earlier, Aduda had filed a point of order asking for the President to be given a six-week deadline to address the nation’s security issues or face impeachment.

said the lawmaker.

“Mr. President, you might want to keep in mind that we talked about matters pertaining to national security and everything else related to it during the closed session.

We also agreed to return to plenary to discuss the progress made in addressing the issue of national security before giving the president until then to address the problem or face an impeachment notification.

Lawan, however, refused the directive, claiming Aduda had not discussed it with him.

Senators from opposition parties stormed out of the session after the decision, led by the Minority Leader, yelling, “All we are saying is, Buhari must go, Nigeria must survive.”

FG Confirms Security Meeting: In response to the development yesterday, the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, assured Nigerians that the government was working around the clock to address the security challenges in the country while fielding questions from journalists following the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting at the State House.

He stated:

We applaud the senators for their patriotism and their concern, but we are working around the clock, 24 hours a day, to ensure that the situation is brought under control, as it was correctly stated that the resolution was passed while we were debating.

“I want to reassure you that the president is aware of all of this, and in fact, I believe another Security Council meeting will take place tomorrow. The president is not taking this situation lightly, and as I often say, some of the measures we’ll take are not ones that can be discussed here in public, but we share your worry and won’t shirk our job.

Mohammed brushed off the jihadists’ threat to kidnap President Buhari, claiming it was only a piece of propaganda.

“As for those who have threatened Mr. President, I think it’s more propaganda than anything,” he declared. It’s absurd,”

While the walkout was orchestrated by PDP legislators, the decision to impeach Buhari is thought to have been made by all the senators.

According to Naijaloaded, Senator Smart Adeyemi (APC, Kogi West) said none of the senators who attended the plenary opposed the impeachment threat.
