Davido’s complaint about the delay in Adeleke’s certificate of return receives a response from INEC

According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), there is no legal requirement that the commission give a Certificate of Return to Davido’s uncle Ademola Adeleke, the incoming governor of Osun State, within 48 hours of the election.

On his verified Twitter account, Davido had criticized the commission for failing to give Adeleke, who had won the Osun election on Sunday, July 17, 2022, a Certificate of Return within 48 hours.

“We are still to receive our certificate 48 hours after our @AAdeleke 01 victory at the Osun gubernatorial elections,” the post adds.

Should we send you fuel money, @inecnigeria? LOL Kindly refrain from interfering with the Osun People’s will! Create the certificate in accordance with the law!

In response to Davido, INEC noted that it had 14 days to issue a Certificate of Return to the election winner in a statement released on Tuesday, July 19, 2022, by Festus Okoye, National Commissioner and Chairman Information and Voter Education Committee.

He stated:

“The Commission is not required by law to provide a certificate to any candidate within 48 hours.

The Commission will not be influenced by partisan political interests because it is not a political party.

According to Section 72 of the Electoral Act of 2022, every candidate who has been returned by the Returning Officer in an election under the Act must receive a sealed certificate of return at an election in the required form within 14 days.

Ademola Adeleke, Davido’s uncle, received the most votes in the Osun State gubernatorial election on July 16.
