Ex-Offender Found Possessing Illegal Drugs At The Lagos Airport

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has remanded an ex-convict named Onyeka Charles Madukolu into detention at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Ikeja, Lagos.

The 44-year-old man was detained for importing 5.90 kg of cocaine into Nigeria hidden within cans of deodorant and women’s lip gloss, according to a statement issued on Sunday by NDLEA spokesman Femi Babafemi.

Onyeka, who received a seven-year prison sentence in Ethiopia for drug trafficking offenses and was freed from prison in 2020, was detained once more at the Lagos airport on Friday, September 16, 2022, while he was flying back from Sao Paulo, Brazil, via Addis Ababa, according to Babafemi.

When his suitcase was searched, it was discovered that he had hidden 5.90kg of cocaine inside deodorant and female lip gloss cans. He stated during the initial interview that he entered the drug trade to generate additional funds to launch a legal business once he was released from the Ethiopian prison in 2020.

The suspect, a father of two children—one from a Nigerian woman and one from a Brazilian woman—told the anti-narcotic agency that he worked in the motor spare parts industry before turning to crime.
