Ifeanyi Uba: Political attacks in the South-East are fueling tension
The deadly attack on Senator Ifeanyi Uba’s convoy is the most recent in a series of deliberate attacks targeting politicians in the South-East area.
While Uba was killed during the attack on his convoy at Enugu-Ukwu, several of his aides perished from gunshot wounds.
Although no one has claimed credit for the incident, the unrest in the area has cost many lives and destroyed many homes, a development that is frequently attributed to separatist operations.
The “Unknown Gunmen’s” actions have made the security situation worse and cost many people their lives, including politicians.
The following politicians have faced attacks in recent years.
On May 30, 2021, the lawmaker from Adamawa State was shot and killed on Imo State Airport Road.
Hope Uzodinma, the governor of Imo State, was a personal friend of the former Goodluck Jonathan aide.
Anosike Chimobi, 38, of Umuedo, Ahiazu Mbaise council area of the State, was detained by police at the beginning of this year on suspicion of killing Mr. Gulak.
On September 18, 2021, Agbasimalo—the Labour Party’s candidate for governor in the most recent election—was kidnapped together with his security detail as they traveled from Ezinifitte to Azia in the Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The candidate was unable to run for office and has been absent ever since.
Mr. Okoye, a member of the Anambra State House of Assembly who represented Aguata Constituency 2, and Cyril Chiegboka, his campaign director, were kidnapped in Aguata in May.
Days after the kidnapping, Mr. Okoye’s body was also discovered at Nnobi, Idemili South Local Government Area of the State, and his head was left at a car park in Amaechi, a hamlet in Nnewi South Local Government Area.
According to reports, unidentified gunmen shot and killed Emeka, a young leader for the All Progressives Grand Alliance, in the hamlet of Utuh in the Nnewi Local Government.
The deceased was taken, according to a media source, after gunmen searched his home. After that, his body was discarded at Utuh Junction.
He is one of the casualties of the violence that has spread throughout the southeast.
In the buildup to the 2021 Anambra Governorship election, Mr Azubogu’s convoy was attacked by gunmen and his aide was killed in the attack.
The assistants were reportedly in route to the airport to pick up the politician.
Mr Azubogu represents Nnewi North/Nnewi South/Ekwusigo Federal Constituency.
