Obasanjo: Except for farming all I’ve accomplished has been by accident

Apart from farming, Olusegun Obasanjo, the former president, argues that all he has accomplished in life has happened by accident.

Obasanjo presided as Nigeria’s leader from 1976 until 1979. He was chosen to be president in 1999.

He completed his second term in office in 2007.

Obasanjo said that his father had advised him to go into farming during a radio station show on Saturday in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State.

“I object to the phrase ‘romance with farming,’ which you used. I work on a farm. How would you define romance? When asked about his “relationship with farming,” the former president reportedly responded, “Everything I have done in my life has been by mistake.

“Farming is the one activity that is not accidental. I’ve only ever done other things by accident. You called that romance, right? No! How would you define romance?

‘You know where I started. I grew up and was born in a village. I stumbled into attending school. Why don’t you do something different, my father just asked me. I then started farming.

“Countries that have succeeded have developed their agricultural industries. First, for food security; second, to begin the industrialization process by processing the produce they harvest from their fields.

“Third, to export it, which is for the purpose of obtaining foreign currency; and fourth, as a way to provide work for young people.”
