Obasanjo: The Census Must Result In The Delineation Of Real Constituencies

The National Population Commission has been tasked by former President Olusegun Obasanjo to make sure that the 2023 census results in a true demarcation of Nigerian constituencies.

The results of the upcoming census must be used wisely by the government in developing policies and making future plans, according to Obasanjo.

The NPC’s Executive Chairman, Nasir Kwarra, accompanied some state commissioners of the body on a courtesy call to Obasanjo on Monday at his residence at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta, Ogun State. The former president delivered the address.

He pleaded with the NPC to carry out a credible, trustworthy, and agreeable census in 2023.

Obasanjo bemoaned the fact that Nigeria had not properly utilized the findings of earlier national censuses.

What purpose do we serve by having a census when we already have one? In the same manner that we continue to avoid discussing religion, ethnicity, and our census, we also continue to avoid discussing these topics now.

“I hope that we will be able to do this well, and I pray that God will help you that you will be able to get it right. I hope that the census figure that we do not use for planning, for actual demarcation, and all that is not serving a meaningful purpose, is a waste of money.

“The census should result in the true constituency demarcation that we have avoided since 2006. Again, I have no idea how long we will avoid it. We need to face the truth and deal with it because we keep fooling ourselves, lying to ourselves, and hiding from it.
