Paul Merson apologizes to the Man United star by phone
Legendary Arsenal player Paul Merson has admitted he apologized to Manchester United’s Harry Maguire over the phone after criticizing the England international “a bit too far.”
Maguire moved to Manchester United in the summer of 2019 for a reported £80 million, making him the most expensive defender in transfer history.
The 29-year-old has not always had a smooth time at Manchester United and has frequently come under fire from spectators and media members.
Merson called the price the Red Devils paid for the defender “crazy” after the trade to Old Trafford was finalized.
In 2019, Merson told Sky Sports that paying £80 million for Maguire was “crazy at the greatest degree.”
Now that Merson has changed his mind, he admits he apologized to Maguire by phone after getting his number from Brendan Rodgers, the manager of Leicester City.
Merson told The Telegraph, “I don’t want to be right on that – I’d rather be incorrect.”
“I want Harry Maguire to score the game-winning goal for England to win the World Cup.
Just my opinion, I said. I called Brendan Rodgers and asked him to give me Harry Maguire’s contact information. I wasn’t at ease with who I was.
“I needed to call him and apologize for saying that even though I disagree with the £80 million. I may have gone a little too far.
“He found it hard to believe. most likely believed it to be a joke. He hasn’t had a fair shake, in my opinion. He’s having trouble with using his right foot while playing with the left.
