Paul Merson Was Shocked By Southgate’s Selection Of Man Utd Star In England Team

Legendary Arsenal player Paul Merson said that he was “surprised” by England manager Gareth Southgate’s selection of Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw for his most recent team.

In preparation for their next UEFA Nations League matches against Germany and Italy, Southgate just unveiled a 28-man roster.

Shaw and Harry Maguire, a teammate at Manchester United, were chosen to be in the squad.

Shaw and Maguire have both played in only two and three Premier League games, respectively, this season under Man United manager Erik ten Hag.

In a statement to Sky Sports, Merson (through HITC) stated:

I wasn’t with Harry Maguire, though (surprised he was selected). I believe he is crucial, as is the way they interact with Gareth (Southgate).

“However, the Luke Shaw one stunned me. The sheer number of skilled fullbacks we have in this country. Gareth will be quite concerned if Harry Maguire is not selected for the Man United lineup come November.

He ought to have brought some players he might have to turn to, in a way. You can’t play international football after missing three months of it, especially in the heat they’ll be playing in.
