Tension As Terrorists Attack Military Checkpoint Along Niger-Abuja (Details)


On Thursday night, suspected terrorists stormed a military checkpoint close to Zuma Rock, a border crossing between Niger State and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

As at the time this report was filled out, the details of the attack were still hazy.

However, it was learned that following the attack, Nigerian Army forces had started a clearance operation.

According to reports, the event led to traffic jams in the neighborhood.

The Nigerian Army has blocked off the Mandala-Kaduna route, according to information obtained by the Punch journalist.

Under the condition of anonymity, a military source told a PUNCH correspondent that “the terrorists grabbed control of the area for nearly 30 minutes and went on shooting before making their way towards the Kaduna axis of the expressway.”

The terrorists were pursued into the jungle by soldiers from Zuma Barracks less than 30 minutes after they had left.

A patrol squad of police officers reportedly arrived to the location later, according a PUNCH report.

Brig Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, the director of Army Public Relations, could not be reached.

Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the public relations officer for the Nigerian Police Force, did not return calls either.
