The Supreme Court dismisses the PDP’s request to move the presidency to the South East

A lawsuit filed against the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to enforce the zoning and rotatory policy in the 2023 presidential election has been dismissed by the Supreme Court.

Justice Adamu Jauro gave a unanimous decision on Friday in which the court dismissed the lawsuit for lack of subject-matter jurisdiction.

Cosmos Ndukwe, a PDP presidential candidate and former deputy speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, filed the lawsuit against his party, asking the court to issue an order compelling it to uphold the party’s zoning and rotatory policy.

The presidential contender specifically asked the court to issue an order compelling PDP to zone the nomination of its presidential candidate to the nation’s south-east geopolitical zone.

Justice Jauro, however, dismissed the lawsuit on the grounds that the selection of candidates for elections was a matter for political parties to handle internally.
